Superintendents Welcome

August 27, 2020

Lion Community,

Welcome to the start of the 2020-2021 school year! While things may seem different, we want you to know that we are still the same LION FAMILY.  In this spirit, it is my pleasure to welcome back students, families and staff of Gloucester City School District.

The first day of virtual learning is Tuesday, September 1, 2020.  Please refer to Gloucester City School  District  for important information including the 2020-2021 school calendar.

The district is excited with our progress and new initiatives.  We are proud of our district wide technology and our one to one technology for all students.

  • Cold Springs School
    • "We Are All In This Together" will be the school theme. There will be banners and we will be sending video messages to healthcare workers on the frontlines, as well as sending messages to our troops stationed overseas.
    • The gymnasium and the amphitheatre received a fresh coat of paint including paw prints!
  • Gloucester City Middle School
    • We have our new TV studio course that will include the exciting daily GMS morning news.
    • Advanced classes for our fourth and fifth grade students who can also take the new and and choir classes.
    • We now have a girls's Soccer team for sixth through eighth grade.
  • Gloucester City High School
    • We are excited to open the College Board's AP Capstone program on our campus this fall. We are one of less than 2,500 high schools throughout the world approved to offer this program. Students will first enroll in the AP seminar course followed by AP research in their 2nd year of study.
    • The Media Center is going through a complete make-over to update it with a cafe for students and 21st century technological capabilities throughout the space. Our main courtyard is also getting a complete makeover as a more environmentally - and student - friendly space.
    • Proudly, we have been named as one of “America’s Best High Schools” by US News & World Report for four consecutive years! For 2020, we were placed in the top 10 high schools in South Jersey in these rankings for the first time in school history. The highest-ranked schools are those whose students excelled on state tests and performed beyond expectations; participated in and passed a variety of college-level exams; and graduated in higher proportions.
    • Our national passing rate on AP tests has now skyrocketed to 58.2% of the 163 national assessments administered this spring being passed, a passing rate that beat both the New Jersey and global AP passing rates in nearly half of the AP courses that we offer.
    • ROTC program will now progress to offering both Naval Science I & II. The purpose of this course is to build on the general introduction provided in Naval Science I, to further develop the traits of citizenship and leadership, and to introduce cadets to the technical areas of naval science and the role of the U. S. Navy in maritime history and the vital importance of the world’s oceans to the continued well-being of the United States.
    • After totally rehabbing our weight room last summer, our cardiofitness room has now been outfitted with brand new, state-of-the-art treadmills, exercise bikes, elliptical machines, and more.

I am honored to welcome the new employees to the school district and am excited about the endless possibilities for their success in the Gloucester City School District as they join a talented and committed staff.  Please help me in welcoming our new Cold Springs School Principal Mr. Craig Speechley.

As we embark on this new school year, flexibility and fluidity are paramount.  We will continue to evolve and continue to search for current best practices. Our goal is to get better every single day!

I want to wish everyone a ROARING 2020-2021 school year!!!

Faithfully in Education,

Dr. Dennis M. Vespe
